  1st WORLD WAR

Due to the delayed entrance of Greece in the war, the Hellenic fleet and the cruiser “G. AVEROF” didn't have significant opportunities to participate in vital naval operations until the end of the war in 1918. However, the entire control of the Mediterranean Sea by the allied fleet and the success of the allied naval strategy which aimed at the blockade of the Central Forces fleet at the Adriatic sea and of the Turkish fleet at Vosporous, relied to a large extent on the blows which were brought about by the Hellenic Fleet and “G. AVEROF” on the Turkish Navy during the recent naval battles of 1912-1913.
The entrance of “G. AVEROF” to Constantinople and the raising of the Greek flag justified the courage and self-denial of the Hellenic Fleet in the struggle for national fulfillment. The imposing outline of the battle Cruiser in Keration Gulf, was a symbol of naval boldness and heroism which excited the fantasy and visions of Hellenism.
